Ashtanga Yoga Class at The Heavenly Spa by Westin Bali

We all know and love the yoga classes at The Heavenly Spa by Westin Bali. Not only because of the fact they have introduced to us many exciting and fun yoga classes, but also because of their wellness specialist, Jitendra Pokhriyal is like a beacon of light that radiates calmness and wisdom, and always inspires us to be better.

Ashtanga Yoga is known as ‘the journey towards freedom’. The true miracle lies in self-eagerness to allow, appreciate, and honor the uniqueness and the freedom of each sentient being to sing the song from the heart. Ashtanga comes from the words ‘ashta’ meaning eight and ‘anga’ that means limbs or steps. Ashtanga Yoga is a journey of eight steps towards self-freedom or Samadhi, which refers to ultimate mental and physical freedom. It is a dynamic form of yoga that emphasizes the harmonic connection between breath and movement. The poses in Ashtanga are always performed in the same order allowing students to learn the sequence and focus on the internal, meditative aspects of the practice.

When they first introduce this weekly yoga class back in July, we were quite hesitant in trying it because it looks so difficult. (You can see this short video of Jitendra Pokhriyal performing Ashtanga Yoga However, that day, Jitendra motivates us to try and he adjust the difficulty level to the students. He said, “Ashtanga yoga is all about repetition. You do one movement over and over again consciously until you feel better and better.” That is the best thing about Jitendra, he encourages participants to challenge themselves but is always mindful of personal limitations. Thus, we feel confident to try it.

Every Friday at 5.15PM at Heavenly Spa’s Wellness Platform, Jitendra holds a session of Ashtanga Yoga in a peaceful garden setting. During this weekly class, guests will learn to connect breath and movement as well as how to perform various poses with the correct methodology and alignment. A number of other wellness experiences are scheduled throughout the remainder of each day for the pleasure of resident and non-resident guests.
