It featured four speakers, namely Prof. I GdePitana, Deputy Minister for International Marketing, Ministry of Tourism of Republic of Indonesia; Ari Prasetyo, the Chairman of the Working Group to Accelerate the Development of 10 Destinations; Ricky Baheramsjah, Head of Investment & Marketing ITDC; and Alfons Van Duijvenbode, Marketing Strategy Expert of the Centre for Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI).
The seminar commenced with a presentation on tourism as a key to the growth of a region and the welfare of its community. Tourism growth together with increased investment is one factor that increases the national income, employment, business and infrastructure development. In the reign of President Joko Widodo, tourism has been appointed a priority sector.
Prof. Pitana then explained that the reason for the development of tourism in 10 destinations beyond Bali is because Indonesia has abundant tourism potential. However, the existence of this program does not mean that the government is excluding Bali. He also went on to say that according to recent data, Indonesia currently welcomes ten million tourists annually and the government is hoping to targeting more than 40 million arrivals by 2019. Prof. Pitana added that the current data indicates that more than 40% of tourists arrive in Bali. Hence it’s important to distribute these numbers to other regions in Indonesia in order to help business and environmental sustainability in Bali.
Meanwhile, Ari Prasetyogone discussed the 10 Tourism Destination Developments Beyond Bali in more detail. The list includes Lake Toba, Tanjung Kelayang, Mandalika, Wakatobi, Morotai Island, Tanjung Lesung, Pulau Seribu and Kota Tua Jakarta, Borobudur, Bromo-Tengger-Semeru, and Labuan Bajo.
Ari explained that the fundamental problem in the development of tourist destinations is management. Therefore, the Tourism Destination Development team has been tasked to create a new method of management known as ‘single destination-single management’. His team is also focusing on what he calls 3As, which are attraction: culture, nature and man-made; accessibility; and amenity. He also emphasized that another priority on his team’s agenda is the importance of developing proper human resources.
During the seminar, Ricky Baheramsjah explained ITDC’s program in planning the development of Mandalika in Kuta, South Lombok. It has been chosen to become a world class tourism attraction area similar to Nusa Dua, where there will be a variety of tourism facilities, such as five-star hotels, an international standard golf course, convention centre, mosque, hospital, art centre and others.
Mandalika is positioned as an ecotourism destination that combines environmentally friendly technologies, such as Solar Farms, Plants SWRO, and it will also allocate 51% of its territory as a green area.
Alfons Van Duijvenbode from CBI later spoke about the role of CBI in introducing new destinations and market strategies for Indonesian tourism in Europe. He explained that tourism destinations beyond Bali could be coupled into a single package with Bali so that the tourists get a combination of unique experiences. The approach taken in marketing tourism products in Indonesia starting from formulating a strategy and product development including developing travel packages and itineraries in accordance to the European market, online marketing and trade shows has great promise.
