This July marks the 50th birthday of Murni. I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih (b.1966 – 2006), was an influential Balinese artist under the tutelage of Dewa Putu Mokoh. She learned and developed an inimitable traditional style of Pengosekan painting. Known for her explicit painting of the nude and sexual body parts, her critiques were unfortunately laden with disapproving synonyms of ‘taboo’ and ‘dirty’.
CELEBRATING MURNI is presented by Ketemu Project Space in collaboration with Sudakara Art Space. Ketemu Project Space conducts a year-long project that gathers artists and writers to celebrate the legacy of Murni. In this exhibition, you can see the original works of Murni, as well as the works of 15 artists, such as: Citra Sasmita (IDN), Dewa Putu Mokoh (IDN), Edmondo Zanolini (ITA), Imhathai Suwatthanasilp (THA), Made Bayak ft. Kartika Dewi & Damar Langit Timur (IDN), Marieke Warmelink (NLD), Mella Jaarsma (IDN), Mintio (SGP), Natasha Lubis (IDN), Ngajakan Putu Agus Arta Wijaya (IDN), Oototol (IDN), Punia Atmaja (IDN), Shahila Baharom (SGP), Wawi Navarroza (PHL), Wholesome Nila (SGP).
With “Merayakan Murni” our goal is to enable artists in the local and international community to give voice to these subjects, so that they, in turn, can generate diverse perspectives and inspire their own social circles,” says Samantha Tio (co-Founder of Ketemu Project Space). This way we are not just remembering Murni, but celebrating her voice and her art. Ketemu Project Space also designed a series of immersive programs to heighten the impact of the exhibition. Engaging public programs such as conferences, artists’ talks and workshops will be organized every weekend from July through September.
