Review: Urchin Bali

Everything is chic and minimalist at the hip Seminyak street that houses The Colony, Kim Soo and the Urchin. We got to try and see what the Chefs at Urchin is making, and here’s what we think about it.

If you’re like me, you might know urchin as a spiky sea creatures that dwells on the bottom of the sea. It has a hard shell, but once you got to what’s inside you’ll taste one of the most delicious seafood. Now, this Urchin we’re talking about is not spiky at all. Though you might find some urchin inspired decor in the walls and in their centerpieces. Urchin is a fresh, fun restaurant and bar in the heart of Seminyak that has established itself as the place to go for vibrant cuisine inspired by the sea. With a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, excellent service, modern, contemporary menu and a welcoming bar, Urchin is a hot-spot for guests to chill and soak up the Seminyak vibe whilst enjoying great food, wine and company.

Chef Gede Prandika has created an approachable and imaginative menu with a Mediterranean feel that is heavily influenced by the sea, but also offers wonderful options for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. There is an excellent selection of the freshest raw seafood but many other options besides. From starters we tried the tuna tartare cone with lime and wasabi. It is the perfect started because it is so fresh and appetizing. We also tried the amazing Grilled scallops, pumpkin puree, potato spaghetti, rocket. And a small portion of Crab Lassagna that’s just light and tasty.

For the main course, we decided to go with the house made pasta options such as Risotto Verde, asparagus, spinach, courgette, grana padano that is just brimming with surprises and delights. The Miso Glazed Gindara, burn cauliflower, artichoke, lemon Meyer is a delight, while the Tonight’s Special – Organic Rib Eye 200gr served with potato rosti and shallot jus is just perfect! If you want to try a bit of everything, we recommend you to try The chef’s 6-course tasting menu with accompanying wines or a 3-course set dinner.

It is recommended to leave space for one of the tempting desserts. This time we opted for the Dark chocolate lava cake, berry coulis, vanilla ice cream and the Strawberry curd, Chantilly cream, meringue for that perfect balance or sweet and rich plus creamy and sour. It was the perfect ending to our Urchin Experience.

What we love about the restaurant is of course their open kitchen that allows us to see what the chef are doing. Guests became the audience to the theater of food preparation as their dishes are constructed before their eyes from the tiniest ingredient up, following the various techniques employed by the kitchen crew as they meticulously prepare the food. The stars of the show are the fresh ingredients, wherever possible locally sourced.

We are also told that they have Happy Hours everyday from 4-7PM where you can enjoy selected cocktails with snacks and tapas for only IDR 65.000++. Come visit the place. We sure love it!
